PSAI Training Offerings for CY 2014

The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) is pleased to announce the conduct of non-degree training courses in statistics and econometrics. The short courses for 2014 include a 2-day module on Introduction to the Statistical Analysis of Quantitative Data. In addition to this, training modules on Data Analysis and Modeling Using R Statistical Software, and, Time Series Analysis, Modeling and Forecasting are likewise being offered and each module will run as noted on the following schedule:

Call for Papers
The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) is pleased to announce the holding of the 2014 PSAI Annual Conference on Housing and Rehabilitation Statistics on 11-12 September 2014 in Cebu City. The PSAI is now accepting contributed papers for oral presentation in the said Annual Conference. The forum will highlight sharing of experiences in the production and analysis of statistics on housing and settlements in the aftermath of natural disasters. Research papers that focus on the applications of statistical methodology and innovative approaches in the production and analysis of data that would enable informed decisions on the sector will be presented. Discussions on issues and concerns that will help make the data system at the sub-national levels more responsive to planners and policy-makers in high risk/disaster prone areas may include but not be limited to geo-hazard mapping, population movements, informal settlements, real estate, social protection policies, and other relevant topics.

Special announcement to participating organizations in The World of Statistics

Statistics and Science: A Report of the London Workshop on the Future of the Statistical Sciences ( is the product of a high-level meeting in London last November attended by 100 prominent statisticians from around the world. This invitation-only summit was the capstone event of the International Year of Statistics, a year-long celebration during 2013 that drew as participants more than 2,300 organizations from 128 countries.

The report is written in an accessible style so people who are not experts in statistics can understand its messages and the field’s impact on society. It can be used as a resource by students interested in studying statistics at university, by policymakers who want to better understand the value statistics provides society and by the general public to learn more about the misunderstood field of statistical science.

The Conference is an annual gathering that promotes scholarly discussion on urgent and relevant issues that need to be addressed by the statistical system.

PSAI Hails Appointment of Academicians as National Statistician and Executive Director of PSRTI

The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) hails the appointments of two life members of the PSAI, Lisa Grace S. Bersales and Zita V.J. Albacea as the National Statistician to head the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Executive Director of the Philippine Statistical Research and Training Institute (PSRTI). Bersales held various posts at UP Diliman, most recently, Vice President for Planning and Finance for the entire UP System, and a former Dean of the UP School of Statistics (UPSS) at Diliman. Albacea was the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of UP Los Baños, and a former Director of the UP Institute of Statistics (UPINSTAT) at Los Baños. Both Bersales and Albacea earned a Ph.D. in Statistics from UP: Bersales from Diliman and Albacea from Los Baños.
