UP School of Statistics Professors and Students won Awards from the NAST


UP School of Statistics Professors, Dr. Dennis S. Mapa and Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bersales, received the 2010 Outstanding Scientific Paper Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). Drs. Mapa and Bersales received the honor for the research paper they co-authored entitled “Population Dynamics and Household Saving: Evidence from the Philippines.” The paper was published in The Philippine Statistician.

In another category, the paper of Dr. Dennis S. Mapa and UP School of Statistics Students, Michael Daniel C. Lucagbo and Czarina Lei S. Ignacio, won the 2010 Best Scientific Poster Award for the their paper “Is Income Growth Enough to Reduce Fertility Rate? Empirical Evidence from Regional Panel Data.”

The awards were given during the closing ceremonies of the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the NAST held at the Manila Hotel last July 15, 2010.

Dr. Erniel B. Barrios Receives UP Natatanging Guro Award


Dr. Erniel B. Barrios, Dean of the University of the Philippines School of Statistics and current Editor of The Philippine Statistician received the Gawad Chanselor Natatanging Guro award, UP Diliman’s highest academic distinction for excellence in teaching in simple ceremonies held at the Malcolm Hall Auditorium on February 25, 2010.

Training on Modeling and Forecasting Financial Markets


The application of econometrics in finance is a major development in the financial markets and provides a breakthrough in modeling of financial applications. Volatility, for example, is perhaps the most important feature of financial market. Accurate estimates of the volatility are essential for successful risk management. The use of nonlinear time series structures such as the Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) has been found to be successful in modeling the attitude of investors towards risk and expected returns.

The aim of this series of modules is to explain the different theories and techniques in forecasting financial time series. The modules include the following topics:
