ABS-CBN News: Group wants DepEd to review proposed Statistics curriculum

MANILA -- A group of statisticians called on the Department of Education (DepEd) to review its proposed statistics curriculum under the K-12 program, citing problems in its planned implementation.

In a statement posted by its current president, Jose Ramon Albert, the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) listed down several issues that they asked the education department to consider prior the implementation of its new statistics curriculum.

Under the new curriculum, concepts in statistics are being proposed to be taught from grades 1 to 8, and grade 10. The subject would be culminated in the second semester Grade 11 Math course in statistics.

POSITION PAPER ON THE PROPOSED STATISTICS CURRICULUM IN K-12


We, the undersigned, officers, as well as past Presidents, of the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI), recognize the current efforts of the Department of Education (DepED) to enhance basic education in the country. We laud the DepED for using the K-12 program as a mechanism for long overdue changes in the basic education curriculum. Concepts in Statistics are being proposed to be taught from Grades 1 to 8, and Grade 10, culminating in the second-semester Grade 11 Math course in Statistics. We extol these efforts to improve statistical literacy among Filipino learners, so that they can become effective citizens in this age of ICT and Big Data.

On behalf of the country’s sole scientific society of individuals and institutions committed to the promotion of the proper use of Statistics, we would like to call the attention of DepED to a few matters that will affect the teaching of Statistics to our young:

PSAI Training Offerings for CY 2014


The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) is pleased to announce the conduct of non-degree training courses in statistics and econometrics. The short courses for 2014 include a 2-day module on Introduction to the Statistical Analysis of Quantitative Data. Call for Papers
The Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) is pleased to announce the holding of the 2014 PSAI Annual Conference on Housing and Rehabilitation Statistics on 11-12 September 2014 in Cebu City. The PSAI is now accepting contributed papers for oral presentation in the said Annual Conference. The forum will highlight sharing of experiences in the production and analysis of statistics on housing and settlements in the aftermath of natural disasters. Research papers that focus on the applications of statistical methodology and innovative approaches in the production and analysis of data that would enable informed decisions on the sector will be presented. Discussions on issues and concerns that will help make the data system at the sub-national levels more responsive to planners and policy-makers in high risk/disaster prone areas may include but not be limited to geo-hazard mapping, population movements, informal settlements, real estate, social protection policies, and other relevant topics.
