ISI South East Asia Regional Network News

It has been a busy 2014 for the ISI South East Asia Regional Network! First, we finally got everyone’s consent and have an Outreach Committee on South East Asia (SEA). I am happy to introduce the members to you. Secondly, I am pleased to share with you the success of the BIG event for the year, the ISI-RSC 2014 Conference, 16-19 November, 2014. With this success, I am now even more convinced of the viability and value of the ISISEA Regional Network. The Conference also provided an occasion for the members of the Outreach Committee to get together. Other than two members who had other prior commitments, the rest of the committee members were there. I report briefly on our discussion. Finally, I have some information of interest for those looking for another conference or for scholarships to do a Phd. feel free to pass along to a friend who may be interested.

I take this opportunity to wish you all very happy holidays and a very happy and fruitful 2015!

MANILA -- A group of statisticians called on the Department of Education (DepEd) to review its proposed statistics curriculum under the K-12 program, citing problems in its planned implementation.

In a statement posted by its current president, Jose Ramon Albert, the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) listed down several issues that they asked the education department to consider prior the implementation of its new statistics curriculum.

Under the new curriculum, concepts in statistics are being proposed to be taught from grades 1 to 8, and grade 10. The subject would be culminated in the second semester Grade 11 Math course in statistics.

We, the undersigned, officers, as well as past Presidents, of the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI), recognize the current efforts of the Department of Education (DepED) to enhance basic education in the country. We laud the DepED for using the K-12 program as a mechanism for long overdue changes in the basic education curriculum. Concepts in Statistics are being proposed to be taught from Grades 1 to 8, and Grade 10, culminating in the second-semester Grade 11 Math course in Statistics. We extol these efforts to improve statistical literacy among Filipino learners, so that they can become effective citizens in this age of ICT and Big Data.

On behalf of the country’s sole scientific society of individuals and institutions committed to the promotion of the proper use of Statistics, we would like to call the attention of DepED to a few matters that will affect the teaching of Statistics to our young:
